EBOOK: WHEN THE DIGITAL BOOK BECOME, BEYOND THE PDF

We publish below an interesting article written Francesco Leonetti, the portal EspertoWeb. The article, very comprehensive in its elaboration, faces well problem which today is still the subject of discussion and evaluation by both the way school, both from the publishers, but I would also say to those who follow closely the evolution of these dynamics. Mind you. An ebook is the file you download online, you charge on the USB and swap via email. That is not an ebook, but the file of a book. Most likely such a file is in PDF format or. DOC. A PDF file is a book lyophilized. Is exchanged digitally, but then enjoyed and used predominantly by analog printers inkjet or laser if things go well. Just as the lyophilized Knorr soup, which just add a bit ‘of water to make them take the reassuring physicality which belongs to the soup. Try to view a PDF file on a device for reading ebook, for example, on a Kindle, Cybook, Sony, and so on. You will find the soup is not as good because the PDF cannot adapt to the characteristics of the device asking only one death printing. The usual sad soup. The ebook, to be true, it is not enough that it is represented only by digital content but states that its use is carried out through a reading device which as a whole represents a “content-interface” that meets the requirements of mimicità and self-sufficiency. Where with mimicità means the behaviors and expected functions to borrow a book and self-sufficiency that we should not feel the need for a more correct and complete enjoyment of the book. A book in PDF is not an ebook, because it cannot be enjoyed properly on a dedicated device, but is most often seen on the computer with Acrobat Reader, with an uncomfortable that has nothing to do with the typical experience of reading a book (thus missing the mimicità) and also not self-sufficient because they often exclaim: “you can print it?”. An ebook is a system consisting of three main components: content-size-device The content must be digital, but not in any format, but a format that better exploits characteristics and peculiarities of the device, with its interface, makes possible the use of the real book. When we read an ebook, we are in fact using the result of these three components, all of paramount importance. The PDF format was not designed to take advantage of the characteristics of a digital device, but rather those of a printer. Well, you get that PDF just do not like when it refers to an ebook. I’m trying to provide arguments and technical objectives, if you do not seem to be enough with the emotional feel. The letters PDF is not reminiscent of a political party bankruptcy? :) So which format best meets the requirements that define properly an ebook? Of course ePub. You do not hear sound even in a more positive meaning and convincing? You do not hear atmospheres evoked by evenings with good friends? “Come on, let’s read your book all’ePub.” Ok, this was the emotional card. It might not be enough, then step to the technical and scientific discussion of why ePub, when it comes to ebooks, is better. (Similar in some ways to SCORM) defines an open format, no owner for the representation of an ebook. The format is concerned to define at least three aspects of the ebook: its content, its style, its structure, composition and metadating (the index, to simplify). The content is defined by the XHTML standard. The style and appearance through the CSS standard. The structure and metadating through XML specifications. So we have: XHTML, CSS, and XML. Ma .. this is the web! This is precisely the disruptive force inherent in the ePub format. It is a web format. Liquid, adaptive, able to be seen well from a classic browser, as well as dedicated devices such as ebook reader or tablet generalists such as iPad. Indeed, it is no coincidence that Apple has chosen the ePub format for iBooks represent the contents of the library. The web format dell’ePub also allows you to explore alternative forms in which parts of the content can be represented. For example, you can think to put together the text, not only the simple image, but also a video. Through a mechanism called dall’ePub called “fallback”, will be the ebook itself decides, based on the potential of the device on which it is running at that time whether to show the video or, if this is not supported (as with a e-ink technology current) alternative content defined by the author, such as an image. If you are curious to open an ePub file, take it apart and see how it’s done, you merely have to rename it by changing the extension from. Epub a. Zip. Unpack the zip and then open the folder that you have obtained. You will find, in most cases, a folder called “OEBPS” inside which are placed: • files with the extension. Htm representing the actual content, the book’s pages • a. Css file that defines the style and appearance of the pages • a file with the extension. Opf through XML that defines the metadata and the composition of the book • a file with the extension. NCX through XML that defines the index of the book Could there be a “img” folder for any images and media used in general and referring pages. Htm. You’ll also find a folder called “META-INF” in which there is a single file: “container.xml” which is used to indicate where the file is located. Opf defining the composition of the ebook (contained in the OEBPS). And finally the file “mimetype” that defines the mime type of the ePub format. That’s it. If you know create web pages, then you will not have many problems in achieving ePub. If not then you want to impelagarvi with codes and tags, the quickest way to produce an ePub is to write it in Word and then convert it to ePub with Calibre. You will not have to do is assign the right styles in the Word document “Heading1″, “Heading2″, etc.. to indicate the voices of the chapters. We think Calibre to interpret and translate them in the respective index in ePub format. Cheers! :)
